Time To Give Your Brows A Little Tender Love & Care

Sage advice from makeup pro, Regina Sneor.  In her third installment, she fills us in (pun intended) on brow neglect and the how-to's for perfectly groomed brows!

Hello ‘Stylisted Followers!

First, I want to thank you all for the kind responses to my previous posts.   I appreciate everyone for reaching out, and I’m so glad my blogs have been helping all of you.  I have also been getting excellent feedback from fellow artists who have agreed with my advice-- this makes me so very happy.

This week, I've been asked by some of my readers to discuss brow grooming.  It’s so funny to me that brow grooming isn’t something that everyone gets done professionally.  When I'm doing an application, the customer usually discredits the brows.  If she has bangs, she doesn’t think anyone sees them.  I also love the logic that one’s brows are too blond to groom or too sparse.  REALLY??  Brows ARE visible…with or without bangs, light or dark hair, sparse or fluffy!

This is what I suggest:

1) Get it done professionally by someone who is respected for good brow work.  I have seen some very badly done brows by “professionals”.  Go to someone that cuts, waxes/tweeze for this process.

2) Make sure you know what it takes to keep them up until the next visit.  You may not always have time to go as often as you need. Invest in a great pair of tweezers.  I personally like Anastasia, Cross, and Bobbi Brown.  (I didn’t know Bobbi had one until about 3 months ago.)

3) Know what products to use to fill them in.  Sometimes, it takes more than just a pencil or a brow shadow.  Anastasia makes some unbelievable products from pencils, to powder color, to tools (yes, you do need a good brow brush), to brow mascara, to stencils!  I’m not a big fan of stencils, but I think it can help those who don’t have much hair to work with.

4) Carefully select the correct product color.  I can’t tell you how many times I see brows that are too red or too dark.  It’s a major distraction from everything else seen on the face.

5) Remember, you are not only coloring the brow hair, you are also coloring the skin where it’s sparse.  Have a professional show you how to do this.  You should brush out color after you apply the product.  It looks more like natural hair.  I start by using a concealer pencil to highlight the outer area of the whole brow.  This way, there is no darkness around the brow and it gives it a nice clean look.  Then, I usually use pencil or brow shadow with a brow brush (Beauty is Life has an awesome brush), brush it out with a dry, clean mascara wand, and finally apply either clear or colored brow mascara.

When I did the Academy Awards Pre-Party a few years back, I wanted to make sure I was able to go to the ever so famous Anastasia Brow Salon.  (I didn’t even check in to the hotel first.  I went straight from the airport to the salon.)  My friend and I had never had our brows done in this salon, and we were obsessed!  It was such a great experience and I left with knowledge and products.  I still use her guidelines to this day.

Remember: A good-looking brow frames the eyes and makes you look less tired.  You will see that you need less eye makeup to pop your eyes.  Good work isn’t cheap and cheap work isn’t good!  Make sure you have a good brow expert to guide you.

Mini-Makeovers at Topshop & Cheeky Chicago’s Fall Fashion Fête!

What a week!  We were thrilled to be a part of Topshop (Michigan Ave.) & Cheeky Chicago’s fall fashion event last night! Chicago’s trendiest ladies gathered to shop new fall fashions (with the help of personal shoppers), find great deals, and receive free mini-makeovers from--none other than--TheStylisted (all the while enjoying a live DJ, eating the tastiest cupcakes from more, and drinking top-notch cocktails from EFFEN)!

Our talented team of stylists set up shop in the spacious cosmetics department and provided shoppers with on-the-spot mini-makeovers (from trendy updo’s to chic makeup--these women were ready to hit the town).

TheStylisted always travels to where it’s needed, after all, and what better time is there to have your hair and makeup done, than at a fashion event?  Topshop provided all of the cosmetics, so the trend-setters at the event were able to test out Topshop’s stylish makeup line applied with a trained ‘Stylisted hand.  Take a look at some of the styles provided by TheStylisted:

Thank you to everyone who came out to Cheeky Chicago’s event last night!  And a huge thank you to our talented stylists!  We had a lot of fun, and we hope you did, too!

Women in Tech(nori)

For those of you who were at Technori pitch last night --or perhaps you caught some of the social media buzz following the event-- we hope you weren’t distracted by the chatter surrounding the controversial remarks directed at yours truly. To fill everyone in, the presenter following our pitch referred to us as “hot girls in yoga pants” (for the record, we were wearing black skinny jeans), and an audience member called foul during the presenter’s Q&A.

Let’s discuss: Men might not be used to seeing female-led companies own the tech stage, given that while women own 40% of the private businesses in the United States (Center for Women’s Business Research), they create only 8% of the venture-backed tech start-ups (Astia). Not to mention, when it comes to critical first-year funding, women received about 80% less capital than men according to 2012 research conducted by the Kauffman Foundation.

These numbers are not only disappointing, they translate into missed opportunity. According to a recent Bloomberg Businessweek article, tech companies led by women are more capital efficient and have 35% higher ROI overall than companies owned by men.

But the tide is changing, and Chicago should be proud of its role in the rise of women in tech.  28% of 1871’s companies are headed by women (Blackline).  And we are proud to know some of Chicago’s incredible female tech entrepreneurs. Keep up the good work Cheeky Chicago, Matchist, Pretty Quick, Heirlume, ZipFit, Brideside, Project Fixup and cheers to the dozens of other female-led businesses in our fine city.

The bottom line: We are incredibly excited to have won Technori pitch last night! It was great to hear the audience recognize the potential of the marketplace we’ve created for in-home beauty service delivery. Thank you to Technori for inviting us to present, for allowing us to share the stage with wildly talented entrepreneurs, and for hosting a fantastic event.

We’re going to go put on our yoga pants and take a victory lap.

Theme Weddings and the Hair and Makeup to Match

For those of you who are currently planning or attending weddings with a theme, you may be thinking about creative ways to incorporate that theme into your hair and makeup.  Being able to express the wedding theme through your style choices is a fun way to reflect the wedding colors, location, or season.  From Fairy Tale Weddings to sleek City Ceremonies, the stylists at TheStylisted can tailor your hair and makeup to whatever event you’re attending.  We’ve pulled together some hair and makeup ideas that may inspire you on the big day.

Fall Wedding

With fall approaching so quickly, it’s only right that our first theme wedding focuses on this season.  Loose, but well-groomed updo’s pair well with autumn (moving away from the beachy look of summer hairdo’s).  Try adding a fall-inspired hair accessory and chic braids to your hairstyle.  One of the hairstyles pictured below incorporates a braid that wraps around the side of the head and ends in a chignon, while several curls fall gracefully out of the updo.  As far as makeup goes, a wine-stained lip fits well with the colors of this season.  Use cream and doe-colored shadows for eyes, because the brown will play well with the changing colors
of the falling leaves and draw attention to your lips.

Fairy Tale Wedding

This photo shoot was based on the Snow-White and Rose-Red fairy tale.  Dark liner lining the top and bottom eyelids, rose-red lips, and a beautiful, long, loose side braid truly bring this fairy tale to life.  A golden wreath, curls tamed into a braid that wraps around the back of the head, and natural makeup show the other sister’s personality.  If choosing Snow-White’s look, use eye shadows that have more of a pink tone.  Use a medium pink shade lipstick or lip gloss.

Wedding in the City

Weddings in downtown Chicago often have a more modern style, so why not choose hair and makeup that play up the city’s liveliness?  Try looking at high-fashion trends for inspiration.  Smoky eyes and dramatic hair give off a contemporary, sculpted vibe fitting for a city wedding.  Silver, dark gray, or dark blue eye shadows match the colors of the city.  Keep lips neutral so that eyes can be the focus of this look.  Messy curls with a refined crystal hair pin or a pompadour-type hairstyle ending with a ladylike chignon are two possibilities for hair.

 English Tea Party Wedding

This bride’s stylish, knotted bun and golden headband look like something out of Alice in Wonderland.  Notice the section of hair that wraps around the crown of the bride’s head—this is the main focus of the hair when viewing the bride from the front.  Peach lips and cheeks pair perfectly with a natural eye.  Try matte tea-color eye shadows.  Focus on restrained elegance, since tea parties are supposed to be prim and proper!

Old-Fashioned Glamour

Curls are the key here!  Whether your hair is half-up or down, these stylish curls will make you look like you just stepped out of an old movie.  Make sure to part hair on the side.  If you have bangs, then they should be styled to sweep across your face.  Black, winged eyeliner can be paired with bright red lips or a neutral tone--you choose!
