A New Bag of Tricks

A couple of weeks ago, Julia and I presented in Chicago’s annual Seedcon Fast Pitch contest. One of our biggest challenges was explaining the virtues of getting one’s makeup done to a predominantly male group of judges. With the help of our mentors at Booth, we crafted a presentation that was chock-full of visuals, enabling those unfamiliar (dudes) to understand the concept of special event makeup. I used my teeny tiny makeup bag as a prop, illustrating the point that I don’t have the tools in my arsenal (let alone the skill) to make the magic happen.

When we were done presenting, I was filled with adrenalin and ready for the open bar. In a rush of excitement, I dropped my prop in what I thought was my purse… but it wasn’t. When I went to my purse the next morning to get ready for the day, my makeup bag (and all of the makeup I own) wasn’t in there.

So, instead of hitting the books, I hit the stores. In a way, it was nice to have a clean slate. There are products I can’t live without, but there are also those products that I continue to replenish out of laziness and ignorance of alternatives. So here was a fresh start  - a complete makeup overhaul. Of course, as a student and bootstrapping entrepreneur, I was in no position to go crazy. So, I started at my neighborhood Walgreens.

I am a firm believer that drugstore mascara brands are not only cheaper, but often better because the cosmetic powerhouses have the resources and competitive push to innovate.  My logic is echoed by Oprah Magazine Beauty Director Valerie Monroe who says, “there are terrific [mascara] options at the drugstore, home of big brands with great research and development teams. Because they're vying for your loyalty, these companies are constantly developing cutting-edge applicator and pigment technologies.” So mascara, check. I also picked up brushes which some of you might be thinking is dicey, but bare with me. Big brand brushes are incredibly expensive (and I had to replace every single brush at once). I have also come to love EcoTools brushes. They are cheap, soft, don’t shed, keep their shape, and are available in almost all drugstores. When I did some Googling, I found that many of you out there also think they're an incredible alternative to the “good stuff.”

Of course, there are some things I will shell out for. Don’t get me started on moisturizers... let’s just continue the makeup discussion for now. Benefit bronzers (i.e. Hula) and Nars blushes (love the cream variety), cannot be replaced by a drugstore alternative. So, of course, I quickly picked up a new one of each after I left Walgreens. I was also introduced to Benefit’s Hello Flawless powder compact and liquid foundation, and I am loving both.

Well, that’s about as girly as I get. But hey, this stuff can make a big difference to how you look and feel. Very curious to hear what everyone thinks – what are the luxury products that are worth your hard earned cash and where does the budget brand more than fit the bill?

  1. I love this blog post! I have an eclectic mix of budget and luxury products. I think drugstore mascaras, especially Covergirl branded ones, are truly the best. I have purchased dior, chanel, benefit, and so on, just searching for those thicker longer lashes, only to find clumpy tarantula lashes. CoverGirl's lashblast is tops. For skincare, i defer to 2 brands -- both pricey, but definitely worth the price. Caudalie and Shiseido both smell and feel supreme.

  2. I also recently lost my makeup bag and replaced with drugstore purchases! My two favorite were:

--EcoTools brushes and I love them! Especially the fat blush brush...it is so soft!
--Physicians Formula bronzer (used to use Laura Mercier) -- I think it's great but my only complaint is if you are clumsy like me and drop your stuff a lot, it breaks easily...but considering the cheap price tag you still may come out ahead!

  3. I love Covergirl mascara from the drugstore! I find that it is the thickest mascara I can find without it being all clumpy. I also find myself buying lots of random lip glosses from the drugstore. While it's not drugstore-bought, I buy the Sephora brand $4 eye liner pencils. They work just as well as any other pencil, and they're only $4. Also, I'm totally going to be checking out these EcoTools brushes now...

One thing I splurge on is my under eye serum. I have tried numerous drugstore eye creams and still find myself with huge black bags under my eyes. I started using the Laura Mercier eye serum and now I can't live without it.

  4. Growing up with a mom who used makeup about once a month, I def entered the world of beauty products at the Wet n Wild level. After reading this post I realize that my makeup bag has slowly evolved a lot over the years; I still save wherever possible, but now spend where I've found it's needed.

    I still save on:

-Brushes – Sonia Kashuk @ Target!
-Mascara – ALWAYS drugstore brands; pretty much any kind. I have also found that the nicer brands are worse
-Eyeliners – I use Loreal, goes on smooth and doesn’t run
    -Lotion– Cerave + Cetaphil

    But now I spend on:
-Concealer – Laura Mercier owns this whole area, I think
-Foundation/bronzer - After years with Bare Minerals, now I prefer glominerals
-Highlighters – definitely considered it a splurge, but I found my YSL touché éclat to be clutch, and now I’m trying the Givenchy kind
-Blush – Nicer brands are def better, but I have yet to find a great blush (Nars doesn't seem to work the same wonders for me)
-Nail polish – OPI / Essie or bust

Hmm, seems like anything that is going to imitate being my face, I spend more money on!

  5. As a male, I sometimes wonder why females often care more about their look than males. Is it in females nature or is it societal? Maybe when it comes to females, males actually do pay more attention to their looks (guilty as charged)...

  6. Oooh, Lauren! I still laugh when I think about the confused girl who opened her purse and found your funny little makeup bag in there!
I shell out big bucks for NARS Casino Bronzer & all of their blushes. The pigment is untouchable. I also love Dior Waterproof Eyeliner!
Since mascara needs to be replaced so often, I definitely turn to the drug store. At the moment, I'm devoted to Maybelline Falsies!

  7. Agree with you about where drugstore brands suffice. To your list I would add Garnier under eye depuffing roller...although I generally apply it over a more pricey eye cream; and I also like Roc products with retinal with which I frequently replace my more expensive brands. I will definitely check out the eco-tool brushes, as I find that my expensive ones shed.
